Doubt is a bridle of the imagination. In uncharted terrain, the bridle is used to steer when the rider realizes that the road leads to a dead end or when the horse carries into an abyss.
Unlike animals, man has an exuberant imagination that has given him a gigantic advantage. Progress is impossible without imagination, but it is also his weak point.
For example, with wolves it is impossible for a leader to do bad things to the pack and still be the leader. When Akela missed, his position in the pack was, to put it mildly, greatly diminished. Wolves don't have the same imagination as humans. They can't be led to believe that Akela didn't actually miss while hunting a young deer. In fact, Akela, risking himself, drove away a young deer when it wanted to attack a pack of wolves and eat them.
And a pack of humans can get such a beating... if they don't doubt what the leader is telling them.
